Video poker is one of the most popular casino games around, whether it’s on the iPad, home PC or inside a casino. And with good reason, as poker has become a widely televised game in recent years. So even if you can’t play at the same level as the pros in table poker, iPad video poker is a game where anyone can play and have a decent shot at winning.

There are a few things you should know before jumping in and starting to play. Understanding the rules of the game and the bets to make will help have the most fun you can have at iPad video poker. And it’s important to know a couple of the most popular variations of the game, and how each one can affect your play differently.

iPad Video Poker: Rules

The rules for iPad video poker are fairly straightforward; the high hands are the same in video poker as they are in table poker, high card, pair, two pair, three of a kind, straight, flush, full house, four of a kind, straight flush, royal flush, in that order.

The aim of the game to get the best 5 card hand with the cards you are dealt. You have to make a bet to begin with, usually between 1 and 5 coins. The actual value of the “coins” run from 1 penny to £/$/€100+. For the vast majority of video poker games, a royal flush (and sometimes a straight flush) with 5 coins will pay more than the linear progression for the regular payouts. Where a royal flush with 1-4 coins may pay out 25000:1, with 5 coins, it might pay out 35000:1. This is done to entice players to bet the maximum number of coins every time.

After you place your bet, you will get 5 cards, since most versions are “Jacks or Better” you need to have at least a pair of jacks or higher in order to win anything. If you get at least a pair of jacks on your first 5 cards, then hold just the pair, or if you have more, the three of a kind, or four of a kind. If you don’t have that, you may have 4 of the same suit or 4 in a row, hold those cards. If you don’t have that, hold any card that is a Jack or higher. If you have a terrible hand with nothing over a jack, hold nothing and take your chances with the draw cards. Once you have chosen which cards to hold, the game will replace your discarded cards and issue you new ones. If you end up with something after this round, then you win.

As mentioned above, most variations are “Jacks or Better”, though there are some variations that have wild cards in them. Deuces Wild is the name of this popular variation of the game, and it can be found alongside Jacks or Better in most casinos. With wild cards, your 4 of a kinds, straight flushes, and royal flushes pay out far less if they have a wild card in them than if they do not.

Some video poker machines may be hooked up to a progressive jackpot which is paid out on a royal flush instead of the normal payment. Often, skilled video poker players can mathematically figure out what the progressive jackpot has to be in order to have a positive return on investment for the players. When this happens, it is likely there will be professional players at the progressive machines night and day trying to hit the jackpot, as they are playing with an implied positive return, and they are racking up casino reward points in the process.
